Why it’s called “Staghorn”

  • Antennae look like antlers — long, branched, horn-like flagella

  • Those “horns” are way more dramatic than in most hermits

  • Genus: Paguristes (often labeled Paguristes sp.)

  • Claws: Left claw larger (classic left-handed hermit)

  • Color: Reds, oranges, browns; sometimes subtle striping

  • Habitat: Indo-Pacific reefs, rubble zones, lagoons

  • Behavior: Mostly nocturnal, shy, hides deep in shells

Aquarium / ecology notes

  • Generally reef-safe, mostly scavenger/algae grazer

  • Peaceful, but can be competitive over shells
