Queen Helmet Snail – Cassis madagascariensis

🔹 Physical Characteristics

  • Shell Size: Can reach up to 30 cm (12 in) in length.

  • Shape: Thick, heavy, helmet-shaped shell with strong spiral ridges.

  • Coloration: Generally creamy to tan background with brown or orange markings, often with a glossy sheen.

  • Aperture (opening): Large, with toothed inner edges; the lip can be orange to pinkish.

  • Operculum: Horny, claw-like, used to close the shell’s opening.


🔹 Distribution & Habitat

  • Range: Western Atlantic Ocean – including the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Florida, Bermuda, and the northern coast of South America.

  • Habitat: Found in shallow sandy or seagrass beds, typically near coral reefs. Lives partially buried in sand during the day and comes out at night to feed.

  • Feeding: Carnivorous, preys mainly on sea urchins. It uses its radula and acid secretions to drill or break through the urchin’s shell.

  • HIGHLY prized among collectors even for it's shell.
