Giant Trevally- Caranx ignobilis

The Giant Trevally is a powerful, apex predatory fish renowned for its strength, speed, and size. As the largest species of trevally, it is a dominant hunter on tropical reefs and open coastal waters. Its aggressive behavior and impressive fighting power also make it one of the most prized fish among sport anglers.


🧬 Key Features

  • Size: Commonly 60–100 cm (2–3.3 ft); can exceed 170 cm (5.6 ft) and weigh over 80 kg (176 lbs).

  • Body: Deep, robust, and laterally compressed.

  • Coloration:

    • Juveniles: Silvery with dark vertical bars.

    • Adults: Dark silvery-grey to nearly black, especially males.

  • Fins: Strong forked tail and powerful pectoral fins for burst swimming.

  • Head: Large, sloped forehead with strong jaws and a blunt snout.


🌍 Distribution & Habitat

  • Range: Widely distributed across the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific, from South Africa and the Red Sea east to Hawaii and the central Pacific, and north to Japan and south to Australia.

  • Habitat:

    • Found in coastal reefs, lagoons, channels, and surf zones.

    • Adults often patrol outer reef slopes and drop-offs, while juveniles inhabit shallow estuaries and mangroves.

    • Depth: from surface waters down to ~80 m (260 ft).


🍽️ Diet

The giant trevally is a voracious apex predator. Its diet includes:

  • Reef fishes

  • Crustaceans (crabs, shrimp)

  • Cephalopods (squid, octopus)

  • Occasionally seabirds (GTs have been observed leaping out of the water to catch them!)
