The Gem Tang is a species of marine fish native to the waters around Mauritius and Réunion in the Indian Ocean. It’s highly prized in the aquarium trade due to its striking appearance and relatively rare availability.
Gem Tangs have a distinctive black body with vibrant white spots and lines, giving them a gem-like appearance, hence the name. They are part of the surgeonfish family, known for the sharp spines on their tails. In the wild, Gem Tangs typically inhabit coral-rich areas and feed on algae and other plant matter.
Due to their popularity and limited distribution, Gem Tangs can be quite expensive and are considered a prized addition to marine aquariums.
This specimen is 5″ and captive conditioned for 4 months in one of our reef aquariums.
