Body Shape: Streamlined and elongated like most tangs.
Coloration:
Males: Feature a black cap or black top on the head, which gives rise to the name "black top."
Bright orange lips and orange highlights near the pectoral fins.
Two orange spines on either side of the tail base (defensive feature).
Size: Can grow up to 18 inches (45 cm) in the wild, usually smaller in aquariums.
Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Hawaii, Japan, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Prefers reef slopes, drop-offs, and coastal lagoons.
Primarily herbivorous, feeding on brown algae and marine plants.
In captivity: Likes nori, algae sheets, and vegetable-based flakes.
Generally peaceful, but males can be territorial, especially if kept with other surgeonfish.
Does best in large aquariums (at least 125 gallons) due to its active swimming needs.
